Alcantarilla

Spain, officially the Kingdom of Spain, is one of the oldest inhabited regions on the planet. It is a country that is located in Southern Europe, politically organized as a parliamentary monarchy. It is the largest of the three sovereign nations that make up the Iberian Peninsula. Administratively, Spain is divided into 50 provinces, grouped into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities with high degree of autonomy.

Alcantarilla is a town and municipality in southeastern Spain, in the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia. The town is only 7 kilometers away from the capital of the region, the city of Murcia, and one of its peculiarities is that it is completely surrounded by pedanias of the municipality of Murcia like Sangonera La Seca, San Gines, Nonduermas, Puebla de Soto, La Nora, Javali Viejo and Javali Nuevo. Iberian and Roman settlement remains have been found, including a beautiful vase of Greek origin that can be see in Murcia' Archeological Museum. Since a road linking the former Carthago Nova, with inland Hispanic towns crossed the town in Roman times, Roman presence seems to have been steady in the town for some centuries.

Alcantarilla situated in the meridian border of the Temperate Zone, it enjoys a pleasurable Mediterranean climate, as its proximity to the sea acts as a thermal cushion. The average annual temperatures stay around 18 degrees Celsius. The winters are mild with an average in January of 10.2 degrees Celsius and the summers are very hot with an average of 25.7 degrees Celsius.

Alcantarilla was for some years the most broadly populated city in Spain given its land area. It is still the most densely populated place in the Region of Murcia with over 2500 people per square kilometre. This changed when, in 1987, its surface increased through the addition of some land from the municipality of Murcia. The economy of Alcantarilla is mostly based on the industrial sector, as well as on the service sector and trade. The most significant industrial area is set in the industrial estate called Poligono Industrial Oeste, shared with the municipality of Murcia.

Alcantarilla is well linked by road to the rest of the municipalities in the Region of Murcia. Alcantarilla has lots of different squares, parks and gardens, where citizens typically gather to chat, play, walk or have some drink or in the ice-cream parlours, bars or restaurants found nearby.
