Alcoi (Alcoy)
Spain, also known as Kingdom of Spain, is one of the oldest inhabited regions on the planet. It is a country which is located in Southern Europe, and politically organized as a parliamentary monarchy. It is the largest sovereign nation of the three nations that make up the Iberian Peninsula. Administratively, Spain is divided into 50 provinces, grouped into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities with a high degree of autonomy. The name Spain comes from the Latin name Hispania whose capital is Madrid which is also the largest city of the Country. Alcoi in Valencian or Alcoy in Spanish, is a city and municipality located in the province of Alicante, Spain. It has an area of 129.9 square kilometers and, according to the 2003 survey a total population of 60,465 inhabitants, ranking as the 6th most populous city in the province. The Serpis River crosses the municipality of Alcoi. Alcoi has significant industries related to textile, paper, food and metal. Furthermore, it has lots of factories which manufacture matches. Alcoi is the financial, commercial and cultural center in the adjacent area. Many outdoors rock paintings exist in Alcoi, and there are some ruins of an Iberian settlement with fragments of Greco-Roman pottery. Some buildings with creative interest in the city are the Archeological Museum, the convent of Sant Agusti, reconstructed in the 18th century with paintings of the 16th century and the Catholic church of Santa Maria, whose style is Valencian Baroque. The most important touristic celebration is Moros i Cristians, in April. Alcoi, known as the city of bridges, is also a city of contrasts, between the historic and the modern, known internationally as the home of the Moors and Christians Fiesta. The Plaza Espana, the historical hub of Alcoi is surrounded by classic architecture, including the Parish Church of Santa Maria and Ayuntamiento. Mountains dominate this region, between which there is much agriculture, cherries being a significant crop. There are numerous mountain ranges in this area, the highest of which is the Aitana range with a peak of 1558 meters. All these mountain zones have now been designated nature reserves. Dotted around this entire area are small villages all with diverse characters but all with friendly inhabitants. Alcoi is closely linked with the neighboring village of Penaguila, both of which have Moorish and historic buildings.
