Mahon

Spain, also known as Kingdom of Spain, is one of the oldest inhabited regions on the planet. It is a country which is located in Southern Europe, and politically organized as a parliamentary monarchy. It is the largest sovereign nation of the three nations that make up the Iberian Peninsula. Administratively, Spain is divided into 50 provinces, grouped into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities with a high degree of autonomy. The name Spain comes from the Latin name Hispania whose capital is Madrid which is also the largest city of the Country.

Mahon, one of the pre-eminent, historical and potential tourism destinations, is the capital city of the Balearic Island of Minorca, located in the eastern part of the island. Mahon boasts one of the deepest natural ports in the world. Mahon derived its name owing to the eponymous Carthaginian general Mago Barca, brother to Hannibal, who is thought to have taken refuge in 205 BC.

Initially, the Mahon city was ruled by the Moors but later was captured in 1287 by Alfonso III of Aragon and incorporated it into the Kingdom of Majorca, a vassal kingdom of the Kingdom of Aragon. During the island's years as a British dependency in the 18th century, Mahon served as its capital and residence for the governor, the most famous being General Sir Richard Kane.

Today, Mahon serves as the seat of the Island Council of Minorca. It is also said the place of best geographical environment and can trace its origin back to prehistoric times.
