Administratively, Spain is divided into 50 provinces, grouped into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities with a high degree of autonomy. The name Spain comes from the Latin name Hispania whose capital is Madrid which is also the largest city of the Country. Alhaurin de la Torre is a town in Malaga province in Andalucia in Southern Spain. It sits at the entrance to the Guadalhorce valley on the slopes of the Sierra de Mijas, 17 kilometres from Malaga city. The conventional and the modern live comfortably side by side in this town, with its old Moorish-style streets and houses in the Barrio Viejo and the modern housing estates and villas on the outskirts. Alhaurin de la Torre has become a wealthy city in which services are the key source of income, but it was traditionally an agrarian village, where citric and sub-tropical fruit plantations and olive groves covering the landscape. The origin of the place goes back to pre-historic times, and it is known that the Phoenicians that set up factories in Malaga and Cartama in about 1,000 B.C. settled in Alhuarin. The Moors, in their time, called it Albarracin, and it grew from that into a bigger collection of farm-houses. The re-conquest of the town in 1485 meant another variation on the name, and the place was lastly called Alhaurin de la Torre. The populace increased sharply due to the influx of Christian settlers after 1571. There are many archaeological remains in the city, most of them being in the Estacion de la Alqueria area, officially designated as being of Cultural Interest. The town has become infamous through the media because of its VIP prison inmates linked to the unique Marbella corruption scandal. Many members of the Marbella council are imprisoned there.
