Almunecar

Spain, officially the Kingdom of Spain, is one of the oldest inhabited regions on the planet. It is a country that is located in Southern Europe, politically organized as a parliamentary monarchy. It is the largest of the three sovereign nations that make up the Iberian Peninsula. Administratively, Spain is divided into 50 provinces, grouped into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities with high degree of autonomy. The name Spain comes from the Latin name Hispania whose capital and largest city is Madrid.

Almunecar is a municipality in the Spanish Autonomous Region of Andalusia on the Costa del Sol between Nerja and Motril. It has a subtropical climate. Almunecar lies in the Province of Granada and has around 15,000 citizens according to the census of the year 2004. Since the death of Francisco Franco in 1975, the town of Almunecar has become one of the most important tourist towns in Granada and this section of coast is now called the Costa Tropical. Almunecar has good transport connections and a football stadium.

Almunecar began as a Phoenecian colony named Sexi and even today, some of its inhabitants still call themselves Sexitanos. Under the Moors, Almunecar blossomed as the fishing town of Al-Munakkap Fortified City or Hins-al-Monacar surrounded by mountains. Although the Phoenecian and Roman history of the district was known from Greek and Roman sources it was not until the 1950's that significant archaeological evidence was discovered.

Almunecar is also known as the town of best geographical environment and has traced its origins back to prehistoric times. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and can also enjoy its natural beauty concealed by the beautiful landscapes.
