Alzira

Spain, officially the Kingdom of Spain, is one of the oldest inhabited regions on the planet. It is a country that is located in Southern Europe, politically organized as a parliamentary monarchy. It is the largest of the three sovereign nations that make up the Iberian Peninsula. Administratively, Spain is divided into 50 provinces, grouped into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities with high degree of autonomy. The name Spain comes from the Latin name Hispania whose capital and largest city is Madrid.

Alzira, having its official and Valencian name in Spanish as Alcira, is a town and municipality of 43,050 people according to the census taken in the year 2006 in eastern Spain. It is the capital of the comarca Ribera Alta in the province of Valencia and is located on the left bank of the Jucar river and on the Valencia-Alicante railway.

Alzira was founded by the Arabs with the name Al-Yazirat Suquar or Jucar Island. During the Middle Ages, it was a prosperous Moorish trading-station. In 1242, James I of Aragon put control of the town in Spanish hands. Alzira, located right on the bank of the Jucar, has suffered devastating floods throughout its history in particular in 1472, 1590, 1864, 1916, 1982 and 1987. Alzira has historically been a walled town, surrounded by palm, orange and mulberry groves and by low-lying rice-swamps, which rendered its neighborhood somewhat unhealthy. It is sometimes identified with the Roman Saetabicula.

Alzira is also known as the town of best geographical environment and has traced its origins back to prehistoric times. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and can also enjoy its natural beauty concealed by the beautiful landscapes.
