Andujar

Spain, officially the Kingdom of Spain, is one of the oldest inhabited regions on the planet. It is a country that is located in Southern Europe, politically organized as a parliamentary monarchy. It is the largest of the three sovereign nations that make up the Iberian Peninsula. Administratively, Spain is divided into 50 provinces, grouped into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities with high degree of autonomy. The name Spain comes from the Latin name Hispania whose capital and largest city is Madrid.

Andujar is a town situated on the southern side of Spain. It is in the province of Jaen on the right bank of the river Guadalquivir and the Madrid-Cordoba railway. Each year the devotion of the people of Andujar leads over half million people to congregate at Cerro de la Cabeza and participate in one of the most popular pilgrimages in Andalusia and which has been declared of national tourist Interest. The fiestas begin in the city a week before, with the proclamation of the pilgrimage, floral offerings and a horseback cavalcade.

It crosses the sierra to the Sanctuary, 32 kilometers from Andujar with stop at Lugar Nuevo for lunch. On Saturday night, the pilgrims visit the Virgin in her chapel and then enjoy themselves in the houses of the brotherhoods that are installed there. On Sunday after an open-air mass the Vigen de la Cabeza is carried in a procession mounted on shoulder-borne supporting beams.

Andujar is well known for its porous earthenware jars called Alcarrazas. It keeps water cool in the hottest weather, and are manufactured from whitish clay found in the neighborhood. It is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
