Donostia-San Sebastian
Spain, also known as Kingdom of Spain, is one of the oldest inhabited regions on the planet. It is a country which is located in Southern Europe, and politically organized as a parliamentary monarchy. It is the largest sovereign nation of the three nations that make up the Iberian Peninsula. Administratively, Spain is divided into 50 provinces, grouped into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities with a high degree of autonomy. The name Spain comes from the Latin name Hispania whose capital is Madrid which is also the largest city of the Country. Donostia-San Sebastian is the capital of the province of Guipuzcoa, in the Spanish community of the Basque Country. The city is located in the northeast of Spain, on the Bay of Biscay, close to the French border. It has a population of 182,930 in 2005 and its scenic coastline makes it a popular beach resort. It is the home city of the Primera Division football club, Real Sociedad. The city's Estadio Anoeta also hosts rugby union matches featuring Biarritz Olympique. Every year on 20 January, the people of San Sebastian celebrate a festival called as Tamborrada. This custom originated by the Spanish tradesmen, including cooks. They mocked the occupying French army during the Napoleonic wars, by aping their daily procession from Monte Urgull to the water-pump at San Telmo. A festival called Semana Grande or Aste Nagusia is held every year in August. There is a fireworks competition in which every night there is a fireworks presentation over the bay, and at the end, a winner is declared. San Sebastian is famous for its Basque cuisine and pintxos and restaurant district near the port. In the 11th and 12th centuries, San Sebastian was a well known place for spiritual people as well as a centre for the growing social and administrative life. A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, Donostia-San Sebastian is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
