Durango
Spain, also known as Kingdom of Spain, is one of the oldest inhabited regions on the planet. It is a country which is located in Southern Europe, and politically organized as a parliamentary monarchy. It is the largest sovereign nation of the three nations that make up the Iberian Peninsula. Administratively, Spain is divided into 50 provinces, grouped into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities with a high degree of autonomy. The name Spain comes from the Latin name Hispania whose capital is Madrid which is also the largest city of the Country. Durango is an industrial municipality situated 30 kilometer east from Bilbao in the Biscay province, in the Basque Country, northern Spain. The city is crossed by the Ibaizabal River and lies in the middle of its wide valley, with the scenic Urkiola mountain range and Natural Park to the south. The most important peak is the majestic Anboto. The population of the city was 26,131 inhabitants in 2004. Durango is a historic city, home of conquistadors like Francisco de Ibarra. The city has the unfortunate claim of being the first place to be blitzed by Hitler's German Air force, at the request of General Franco. About 500 people were killed in Durango but it was not as famous as the following bombing of Gernika a few days later, to which Pablo Picasso paid tribute in his painting for the Paris Exhibition. There is less heavy industry in the municipality than ten or twenty years ago as it's being replaced by high technology industries. Durango is the home of Euskal Telebista. This public television company broadcasts in Euskera, Basque and Spanish. It also has a global presence with satellite channel beamed across the world. Durango, it's the kind of town you daydream about. It is a city where you will find that the people are genuine, authentic, friendly, high energy, and down to earth. It is a city with endless recreational opportunities, rich history, and modern day luxuries. A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, Durango is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
