El Puerto de Santa Maria
Spain, also known as Kingdom of Spain, is one of the oldest inhabited regions on the planet. It is a country which is located in Southern Europe, and politically organized as a parliamentary monarchy. It is the largest sovereign nation of the three nations that make up the Iberian Peninsula. Administratively, Spain is divided into 50 provinces, grouped into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities with a high degree of autonomy. The name Spain comes from the Latin name Hispania whose capital is Madrid which is also the largest city of the Country. El Puerto de Santa Maria, which is Spanish for The port of Saint Mary, is locally known as just El Puerto. It is a city located on the banks of the Guadalete River in the province of Cadiz, a province of southern Spain, in the southwestern part of the autonomous community of Andalusia, being the southernmost point of continental Western Europe. According to the 2005 census, the city has a population of 82,306, of which 50,000 live in the urban center, and the remainder in the surrounding areas. The town of El Puerto de Santa Maria is 10 kilometers north east of Cadiz across the bay of Cadiz and is best known for its ferry El Vaporcito which has been in operation for over 100 years carrying passengers to and from Cadiz to El Puerto. The town also hosts large groups of motorcyclists during the Jerez Motorcycle Grand Prix. El Puerto is an excellent place to sample local tapas and seafood, where most tourists head for the Rivera del Marisco where it can be bought in paper cones to be taken away or eaten at tables and that teamed with the abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables leads to excellent restaurant menus. A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, El Puerto is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
