Elx (Elche)
Spain, also known as Kingdom of Spain, is one of the oldest inhabited regions on the planet. It is a country which is located in Southern Europe, and politically organized as a parliamentary monarchy. It is the largest sovereign nation of the three nations that make up the Iberian Peninsula. Administratively, Spain is divided into 50 provinces, grouped into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities with a high degree of autonomy. The name Spain comes from the Latin name Hispania whose capital is Madrid which is also the largest city of the Country.
Elx in Valencian Catalan or Elche in Spanish is a city located in the comarca of Baix Vinalopo, in the Land of Valencia, Spain, near the Mediterranean Sea. According to the 2003 census, Elx has a population of approximately 230,000 inhabitants. It ranks the third most populated city in the Land of Valencia Autonomous Community and the second within the Alicante province. It has an area of 326.1 square kilometer and a population density of 635.27 inhabitants per square kilometer. A small creek called Vinalopo flows through the city dividing it in two sides.
The economy of Elx is based, in large part, on the footwear industry. With over 1,000 shoe factories, it is the most important footwear industries in Spain and the rest of Europe. There are other economic activities in Elx like agriculture that yields dates, olives, cereals and pomegranates, although it has lost importance in the last years. It also has rubber industry which employs 20 percent of the workforce, and tourism. The city also produces wooden furniture, cognac, wine and olive oil.
Elx can also be described as the town of best geographical environment and can trace its origins back to prehistoric times. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and gain enthusiasm in its natural beauty and populace. A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, Elx is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
