Gijon
Spain, also known as Kingdom of Spain, is one of the oldest inhabited regions on the planet. It is a country which is located in Southern Europe, and politically organized as a parliamentary monarchy. It is the largest sovereign nation of the three nations that make up the Iberian Peninsula. Administratively, Spain is divided into 50 provinces, grouped into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities with a high degree of autonomy. The name Spain comes from the Latin name Hispania whose capital is Madrid which is also the largest city of the Country. Gijon is a coastal industrial city and a city in the autonomous community of Asturias in Spain. Early mediaeval texts mention it as Gigia. It was a significant regional Roman city, although the area has been settled since earliest history. The name was initially applied to a small peninsula presently referred to as Cimadevilla, literally top of village, between two beaches, one of which has a recreational port at present. The main port is one of the biggest in the north of Spain and is called El Musel. The city is located on the central Asturian coast, from sea level to an altitude of 513 metres, bordered on the West by Carreno, the East by Villaviciosa, and to the South by Siero and Llanera. The city is distinguished by the peninsula of Cimadevilla which separates the beach of San Lorenzo and adjacent neighborhoods to the east from the beaches of Poniente and Arbeyal, the shipyards, and the recreational port and the Port of El Musel to the west. It is close to the other main Asturian cities, Oviedo and Aviles. The A-66 motorway, A-8 and the AS-1 are the main highway accesses to the city. By train, Gijon has daily service to Madrid, La Coruna, Santander, and Barcelona. Cruise ships call at El Musel. Gijon is the kind of city you daydream about. It is a city where you will find that the people are genuine, authentic, friendly, high energy, and down to earth. It is a city with endless recreational opportunities, rich history, and modern day luxuries.
