Girona
Spain, also known as Kingdom of Spain, is one of the oldest inhabited regions on the planet. It is a country which is located in Southern Europe, and politically organized as a parliamentary monarchy. It is the largest sovereign nation of the three nations that make up the Iberian Peninsula. Administratively, Spain is divided into 50 provinces, grouped into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities with a high degree of autonomy. The name Spain comes from the Latin name Hispania whose capital is Madrid which is also the largest city of the Country. Girona is a city located in the northeast of Catalonia, at the union of the rivers, Ter and Onyar. It is the capital of the Spanish province and of the Catalan comarca of the Girones. The recorded population in 2005 was 86,672 of Girona as per the census survey. The first inhabitants in the region were Iberians but later on, Romans constructed a castle over there. The Diocese of Girona in Catalonia is bounded on the north by the Pyrenees, on the south and east by the Mediterranean and on the west by the dioceses of Barcelona and Vic. The traditional part of the city with its formidable fortifications stands on the steep hill of the Capuchins, while the more modern area is in the plain and stretches further than the river. The bastions of the walls which survived many blockaded are to be seen. The current structure is one of the noblest monuments of the school of the Majorcan architect Jaume Fabre and one of the finest specimens of Gothic architecture in Spain.
