Santander




Spain, also known as Kingdom of Spain, is one of the oldest inhabited regions on the planet. It is a country which is located in Southern Europe, and politically organized as a parliamentary monarchy. It is the largest sovereign nation of the three nations that make up the Iberian Peninsula. Administratively, Spain is divided into 50 provinces, grouped into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities with a high degree of autonomy. The name Spain comes from the Latin name Hispania whose capital is Madrid which is also the largest city of the Country.
 
In the Roman Empire, the town of Santander was known as Portus Victoriae Iuliobrigensium. Its name is derived from St Emeterio, a martyr whose head was brought there in the 3rd century as per the legend. In 1187, King Alfonso VIII made the abbot of San Emeterio lord of the town, and in 1248 Santander took part in the battle for Seville, receiving a coat of arms as reward. The port city of Santander is the capital of the independent community of Cantabria situated on the north coast of Spain between Asturias and Basque Country.
 
Santander’s population in 1998 was about 184,000 inhabitants, just more than a third of Cantabrians living in Santander. Today it remains a popular tourist destination and is renowned for its mild climate. The Sardinero beaches are nice urban beaches and its Plaza de Canadio is the most popular place for drinking. The Plaza immediately borders seven different bars and many other taverns are nearby.
 
Santander, as the town of best geographical environment can trace its origins back to prehistoric times. This is evident from the archaeological sites found throughout the town. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and accept gain enthusiasm in its natural beauty and populace. It enjoys a reputation with worldwide travelers, and is one of the most visited places.
