Santiago de Compostela
Spain, also known as Kingdom of Spain, is one of the oldest inhabited regions on the planet. It is a country which is located in Southern Europe, and politically organized as a parliamentary monarchy. It is the largest sovereign nation of the three nations that make up the Iberian Peninsula. Administratively, Spain is divided into 50 provinces, grouped into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities with a high degree of autonomy. The name Spain comes from the Latin name Hispania whose capital is Madrid which is also the largest city of the Country. Santiago de Compostela is the capital of the self governing community of Galicia. It is located in the northwest region of Spain in the province of Coruna. It is the European City of Culture for the year 2000. Its cathedral is the objective of the important medieval pilgrimage route, the Way of St James, which is still walked today. Its population was 92,298 inhabitants as of 2004. It also has a fine University which can be seen best from an alcove in the large municipal park in the centre of the city. The University guarantees youthful night life. Santiago has many narrow winding streets full of historic buildings. The new town has less character, though some of the older parts of the new town have few big apartments in them. Santiago gives its name to one of the four military orders of Spain, Compostela, Calatrava, Alcantara and Montesa. The existing wind from the Atlantic and the surrounding mountains unite to give Santiago some of Europe's highest rainfall that is about 66 inches annually. Santiago de Compostela enjoys a good reputation with worldwide travelers, and is one of the most visited places. It is also said the place of best geographical environment and can trace its origins back to prehistoric times.
