Teruel

Spain, also known as Kingdom of Spain, is one of the oldest inhabited regions on the planet. It is a country which is located in Southern Europe, and politically organized as a parliamentary monarchy. It is the largest sovereign nation of the three nations that make up the Iberian Peninsula. Administratively, Spain is divided into 50 provinces, grouped into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities with a high degree of autonomy. The name Spain comes from the Latin name Hispania whose capital is Madrid which is also the largest city of the Country.

Teruel is a city in Aragon, Spain. It is the capital of Teruel Province. It has a population of 28,194 at the 1996 padron municipal and 30,282 in the 1991 census. Teruel's remote and mountainous location is 915 meters above sea level and its low population has led to relative isolation within Spain. A campaign group with the slogan Teruel exists was founded in 1999 to press for greater recognition and investment in the city and the province. Teruel remains the only provincial capital in Spain without a direct railway link to the capital, Madrid.

The beauty of the city's Islamic inheritance has been recognised by UNESCO, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization that includes four churches in the World Heritage Site Mudejar Architecture of Aragon, notably the city's ornate cathedral in the Mudejar style. There is a very small statue of a bull, called Torico, and is located in the Carlos Castell Square. It is noted for its harsh climate, its jamon Serrano, its pottery and a dinosaur park. In the middle ages it possessed a prominent Jewish community, which enjoyed several privileges, and which paid in the fourteenth century a yearly tax of 300 sueldos. Its members were engaged in commerce and industry, especially in wool-weaving. During the persecutions of 1391 many of them were killed, while others accepted Christianity in order to save their lives.

The city changed hands several times, first falling to the Republicans and eventually being re-taken by the Nationalists. In the course of the fighting, Teruel was subjected to heavy artillery and ariel bombardment. Teruel is one of the preeminent, historical and potential tourism destinations that are located in the Teruel province of Spain.
