Torrevieja

Spain, also known as Kingdom of Spain, is one of the oldest inhabited regions on the planet. It is a country which is located in Southern Europe, and politically organized as a parliamentary monarchy. It is the largest sovereign nation of the three nations that make up the Iberian Peninsula. Administratively, Spain is divided into 50 provinces, grouped into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities with a high degree of autonomy. The name Spain comes from the Latin name Hispania whose capital is Madrid which is also the largest city of the Country.

Torrevieja is a seaside city and municipality located on the Costa Blanca in the province of Alicante, in south-eastern Spain. The city had a population of 84,868 in 2005. It lies about 30 miles south of the city of Alicante and was originally a salt-mining and fishing village as it is located between the sea and two large salt lakes which is Las Salinas, which give this city a healthy micro climate.

Until 1802, this city existed only as an ancient guard tower, which gave the town its name and some laborers' cottages. In 1829, the town was completely decimated by an earthquake but the mines were soon reconstructed and re-opened. In the 19th Century, the salt was mainly shipped from the town by Swedish and Dutch ships.

In recent years the local economy has hugely expanded due to the tourist industry. This includes both a strong contingent of British, Germans and Scandinavians, many of whom live there all the year round, and Spanish tourists who have a holiday home in the city. In 2004 it had the largest number of British residents of all the Spanish municipalities. The city is a conservative stronghold, with the Partido Popular holding 15 seats in the local assembly. The world-famous Habanera festival for choral groups is held every August, when the city population expands approximately ten fold, like many other towns along the Costa Blanca.

Torrevieja enjoys a very good reputation amongst worldwide travelers and hence is one of the most visited places in Spain.
