Villena




Spain, also known as Kingdom of Spain, is one of the oldest inhabited regions on the planet. It is a country which is located in Southern Europe, and politically organized as a parliamentary monarchy. It is the largest sovereign nation of the three nations that make up the Iberian Peninsula. Administratively, Spain is divided into 50 provinces, grouped into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities with a high degree of autonomy. The name Spain comes from the Latin name Hispania whose capital is Madrid which is also the largest city of the Country.
 
Villena is a city located in the province of Alicante, Spain. It has an area of 345.6 kilometers 2 and, according to the 2002 census, a total population of 32,892 inhabitants. The river Vinalopo flows through the municipal term of Villena. The economy of the city is based on footwear, pottery, furnitures and wines. Villena was settled by Iberians. After the Moor invasion of the Iberian Peninsula, the king James I of Aragon reconquered the city in 1240, establishing a marquessade in this area.

Some places of tourist interest in Villena are the municipal palace, which keeps the Treasure of Villena, an Iberian treasure and the Castle of la Atalaya, constructed by the Arabs in the 11th century, the late Gothic Catholic church of Santiago and the Archeological Museum. It is also important its festival of Moros Cristianos. Villena enjoys a very good reputation amongst worldwide travelers and hence is one of the most visited places in Spain.
