Bellver Castle: A Monument of Palma
A fresh looking 14th century majestic fortress with sweet smelling pine woods, a fascinating museum and outstanding views of the Palma Bay: that is Bellever Castle. Looking at this castle, so well maintained, it is hard to believe that it has been up for approximately 700 years. Begun by Jaume II in 1300 and constructed by Pere Salva, the designer of the Almudaina Palace, it is completely rounded by barriers as many other Spanish castles. It also has three large towers around an inner patio joined by a curve to a free station. The patio itself has 2 levels, the soil floor with hemispherical arches and a plane roof, the upper height with rib-vaulting and Gothic arches. For the full result, walk around the moat; then, ascend onto the top and look down into the patio to evaluate the complementary styles. While you are there, watch out for the town and the bay for one of the best images in Palma (Bellver destined lovely visions in antique Catalan). For many years, the castle was used as a jail. Jaume III's widow and sons were locked up here for almost all their lives. These days, it includes Palma's museum of community history that traces the expansion of the town throughout its artifacts, with ceramics from Spanish, Arab, Roman and Talaiotic.
