The Cathedral of Toledo: An Extraordinary Integration of Light

Toledo is a city situated in middle Spain and the capital of the region of Toledo and of the independent society of Castile-La Mancha. In 2004, the population of Toledo was 73,485 inhabitants. The Cathedral of Toledo was designed after the Bourges Church. Although it also mixes some unique elements of the Mudéjar technique, it is extraordinary for its integration of light, and no part is more amazing than the Baroque altar named El Transparente: unbelievable shapes of bronze castings, painting, stucco, and numerous colors of marble, a magnum opus of medieval environment combined by Narciso Tomei in order to surpass daily deterioration.

Only a few minutes of a ray of sunlight passing throughout a properly oriented opening in the top provide the feeling that the entire altar extends to heaven. The church’s name derives form this peculiar characteristic. This Gothic Cathedral (from the 13th to 16th centuries) has 5 naves and numerous chapels. Some of the most renowned are: The Santiago Chapel, the Main Chapel and its wonderful Altarpiece, The Mozarabic Chapel, Christian during Moorish time in Spain and The Mozarabic Chapel.
