The Unamuno House-Museum: Guarding the Possessions of Miguel de Unamuno

The Unamuno House-Museum or Casa-Museo Unamuno is situated in the old Hotel Fuerteventura, and it was the residence of Miguel de Unamuno when he lived in the island. In addition to a duplication of the type of space that he taken and his possessions, there are texts and photographs, which show the strong connection that the Basque writer had with the island.

Miguel de Unamuno was born in 1864 on Bilbao, he was both writer and philosopher; incongruously anti-academic and one of the most important delegates of the literary group Generación '98. His labor confers the dichotomy among cause and the Christian religion, faith and free thinking, and the vainness of reason when countenancing the "tragedy" of death. Even though he was Basque, he was educated in fourteen other languages; he even inscribed in Spanish.

Unamuno traveled to Salamanca, becoming a leader of Greek at the college. He went throug his religious disaster in 1896, became director in 1901 and was finally deported to Fuerteventura in 1924 due to his resistance to the military autocracy of General Primo de Rivera. He died in 1936, soon after the occurrence of the Spanish Civil War.

This house was constructed in 1758 and it was the house of the Salamanca University's directors. He was one of the most extraordinary of the contemporary Spanish philosophers. In this museum, you can see the library and office that includes over 6000 manuscripts and books of him.
