Alcazar de los Reyes Catholics: A Tribute to Them

The Palace of Kings Catholics is bordered by the GuadalquivirRiver, in Cordova, capital of the province of the same name. This building of military character was constructed by order of King Alfonso XI in 1328. In the Palace, historical personages who inhabited it are evoked easily: Queen Isabel and her husband Fernando, who during eight years governed Spain, and the five children of this egregious marriage, among them infant Ms. Maria, who were born in this palace, and Don Juan, the spoiled young and first king of unified Spain.

In this palace, historical and peculiar facts were registered as the baptism of the Cordovan infant. The palace of Cordova is a sober set, with magnificent gardens and patios of mudéjar tradition. At the present, it has a Plant of Strength in which interior the building and gardens are located. Its form is almost square with four towers. One of them, the Dove, was demolished in the middle of the last century. You can get to the enclosure by the tower of the Lions. There are different accesses to the tower of the Tribute and the Inquisition. From the main gallery, one enters the Hall of the Mosaics; there you will find the discovered Roman mosaics in the seat of the Track, and sarcophagus of centuries II and III. From this hall, you can get to the Real baths and the Morisco Patio, which is surrounded by arcs with abundant water-related elements.

Crossing the Morisco Patio, the gardens are located. In one of these magnificent gardens, the Stroll of the Kings, the statues of monarchs, who in one way or another are related to the palace, can be found too. For instance, a sculpture group represents the Kings Catholics before Cristóbal Columbus. Some years ago, Cordova was declared Patrimony of the Humanity. Moreover, it is under the protection of the generic Declaration of Decree of 22 of April of 1949, and Law 16/1985 on the Historical Patrimony Spanish. In 1993, the Meeting of Andalusia granted a special reconnaissance to the castles of the Independent Community of Andalusia.
