Palace De Toledo: Guarding the History of Spain


Constructed by the Romans and modified by Visigoths and Arabs, the Palace of Toledo has its origins in strength. King Alfonso I SAW, after the conquest of the city, he fixed by himself the residence. This tradition was followed by Carlos I and Felipe II after the reconstruction carried out in 1535.

The building was destroyed during the War of Succession, towards 1710. In 1771, Carlos III yielded, and Lorenzana Cardinal stopped the foundation of the House of the Charity. Nevertheless, the building was about to suffer a new disaster when it was burned by the troops of Napoleon in 1810. By this reason, it was rebuilt in 1882, moment at which the Academy settled General Military.

The Palace faced the misfortune again, and another fire damaged it seriously seven years later. Again, it would be re-constructed and dedicated to the same aim of military school, until the siege undergone in the Civil War.

After its reconstruction in the decade of 1950, respecting the old structure of the building, which had Alonso de Covarrubias, the Museum of the Siege was created and a section of the Museum was transferred to his Army, emphasizing, between its collections of arms, coming from Factory of Arms of Toledo. In the rooms of the superior floor, they emphasize scale models of five important battles of the History of Spain.
